The trail was covered with snow, ice, and blowdowns. Trailheads were inaccessible. Parking lots to get to trailheads were inaccessible. Roads were inaccessible&

However, a small army of volunteers attacked over 30 miles of trail, removed blowdowns, shoveled parking lots, repaired creek crossings, and in some instances shoveled their way into trailheads. Three days before the race, the trail was open from one end to the other, cleared and flagged.

At the same time, runners were anxiously checking in to make sure they could race. A car load of Canadians, five to six Navy cadets, a large group of out of towners and 100s of local runners all had cabin fever; all had been disappointed as area trail races had been cancelled for the past few weeks.

Given the chance to race, the runners without exception, had runner s high just for showing up. They could have been told they would have to run the length of the race in the creek and eat dirt and that would not have dampened the mood (thanks volunteers for this).

I am sorry to report this to our non-Maryland runners but the two marathon winners and the male 50K winner are Marylanders and the woman s 50K winner Kari Brown lives just across the border in Pennsylvania.

Local legend Mark Hoon won the marathon. This was Mark s third overall win in the marathon division. The one year he entered the 50K division he came in second. He and Rob Magin own this course. Cassy Crouse-Rizoul from nearby Middleton (in Frederick County) won the woman s division. Hopefully she will come back. The woman s field has always been tough.

Joshua Hunsberger won the 50K in an amazing 4:17 for the third year in a row. Joshua ran the 50K in 4:16, 4:17 and again this year in 4:17. What a machine. No matter what we throw at Joshua he loves 4:16/4:17.. Last year an extra spite mile was added. The year before there was ice. This year snow. Nothing keeps Joshua from that target 50K time.

Kari Brown from Bedford, ,Pennsylvania not only won the 50K in 5:02 which is great but she chicked her husband Randi. This very nice couple runs the race every year and are on their way to Massanutten to run the 100 mile trail race in May. Watch out for those two.
